The Engaging the Hindquarters Workshop
The foundation is everything.
Add "Engaging the Hindquarters" to your tool box.
It's one of the big secrets of good horsemanship.
All of this with clear step by step instructions to use with your horse:
Learn how your seat, posture, and position affect your horse and how to sit correctly.
The way you use your hands matters.
Learn 3 key arena exercises to make quick changes and teach your horse to engage its hindquarters.
What is “engaging the hind quarters?”
The hind quarters are engaged when the horse is driving forward from behind. The hind quarters are the horse’s source of power. (If you are fearful of too much power - don't worry.)
It is when the horse takes deep steps with the hind feet. A good goal is to have your horse’s hind feet step into the tracks of the front feet.
Your horse's gaits will look more fluid and graceful and be more comfortable to ride.
Engaging the hindquarters is the first step towards real collection. Real collection is not a “head set.”
The opposite is when the horse’s back is hollow (low) and they are heavy on the forehand.
A horse who is heavy on the forehand drags themselves around, is rough to ride, and has a weak top line.
The hind feet are out behind the horse and often take little steps which do not reach under the horse.
This horse often has its head up.
Do any of these things sound familiar?
Has a judge every commented...
Heavy on the forehand
Need more engagement
Head is high
Nose is in front of the vertical
Horse is long
Dragging feet in backup
Hint: In many situations a high headed horse can be changed by engaging the hindquarters and strengthening the back rather than using a tie down.
Learn how to apply this to your horsemanship.
If you want to score well in virtual trail rider challenges, western dressage, dressage, working equitation, or ranch horse events your horse needs to engage his hindquarters.
Engaging the hindquarters will even help your TRAIL HORSE!
Your trail horse will also stay sound longer and give you a much smoother ride if he engages his hindquarters. Often times what a person complains about the horse’s trot being too rough, or their canter being hard to ride, it is because the hind quarters are not engaged.
They will even navigate difficult terrain better if their hind quarters are engaged.
Struggling with leads?
Yup, engage the hindquarters.

“I can’t recommend Kelli enough.”
I was blessed to meet Kelli at the Iowa Horse fair in 2023 and shortly after, attended her retreat at River Valley Horse Camp in Iowa. I was hooked on her teaching style right away. She is clear and straight forward, yet kind and encouraging.
She has a way about her that puts you at ease and makes learning fun, but she is also honest and addresses what is needed to help her students progress. I have been participating in the online trail challenges this past year, so it was a natural progression to join the trail obstacle horsemanship group and then the small group zoom coaching.
My horse is a big draft cross who tends to be heavy and pushy, so I worked with Kelli this past winter on taking him back to the basics with lots of groundwork. The weekly zoom meetings were fantastic and gave us something to focus on each week. And learning from the others in the group was equally valuable.
When I came back to riding early this spring, the difference in his responsiveness and lightness was obvious after all of our time spent on the ground. I can’t recommend Kelli enough…she is a great coach and a wonderful person who will not only steer you right with your horse, but also with your heart.

Is this is the Real Deal ?
Let me introduce myself to you. I am Kelli Paulson, clinician, trainer, instructor, problem solver, author, trail course designer, event planner, mother and a cherished daughter of God.
Learning foundation horsemanship from some of the greats changed my life. I went from being a good rider to riding with timing, feel and confidence. I have been able to help 100's of horses and riders, like you, with their struggles. I was given a great gift.
With this gift, I have trained and taught horsemanship full time since 2005, while raising my daughters and now, raising my son. Horsemanship has taught all of us many things about confidence, willingness, courage, tenacity and helping others.
Many know me as a Trail Obstacle Enthusiast, teaching clinics and hosting Trail Rider Challenges both in-person and virtually, writing How to Build Simple Trail Obstacles, co-authoring the Working Equitation Handbook, and creating the Trail Obstacle Horsemanship membership.
Horsemanship has many levels.
Engaging the Hindquarters is a game changer. I would love to teach you how!
